Abandoned-cart recovery on WhatsApp

Last updated: 16 July 2026

When a shopper abandons a Shopify checkout, Stravax Engage waits a short delay, then sends them a WhatsApp recovery message with a link back to finish their order, respecting the consent their checkout gave (see below). If they complete the order before the delay is up, the message is cancelled instead of sent.

How does abandoned-cart recovery work?

Shopify sends Stravax Engage a webhook whenever a checkout is started or updated. From that webhook, Stravax Engage records the abandoned checkout and schedules a WhatsApp recovery message after a delay, it doesn't send instantly the moment a shopper drops off. When the delay elapses, Stravax Engage checks the checkout is still open before sending: if the order was already completed, or the message was already sent, it's skipped rather than sent again. Otherwise, the shopper receives a WhatsApp message with a link back to their cart so they can finish checking out.

Because this is typically the first message in a new WhatsApp conversation, it goes out as an approved template rather than a free-form message. See message templates for how template sync and approval works.

Will every abandoned checkout get a WhatsApp message?

No. Consent is checked before every recovery send, against the category of the template you configured for recovery. If your recovery template is a marketing-category template, it only sends to a customer whose checkout indicated marketing opt-in; a shopper who didn't opt in to marketing is not sent a marketing recovery message, regardless of how far they got through checkout. If you configure a utility-category template instead, it rides the service consent a checkout itself implies. Most stores use a marketing template here, and choosing the template's category is how you choose which consent bar applies.

What happens if the shopper completes the order anyway?

If the order is completed before the scheduled message goes out, Stravax Engage cancels the recovery message. You won't see a customer get a WhatsApp nudge to finish an order they already placed.

How is a recovered order attributed?

Stravax Engage records whether a completed order follows one of its recovery messages, so you can see how many of your abandoned carts actually convert after a WhatsApp nudge, not just how many recovery messages went out.

What data does this store, and for how long?

For each abandoned checkout, Stravax Engage stores only:

Data stored Not stored
Customer name Email address
Customer phone number (the WhatsApp recipient) Billing or shipping address
Checkout token, recovery link, currency, cart total, item count, and timestamps Payment details or order line items

This data is kept for up to 90 days from when the checkout was abandoned, and is then deleted. It's also deleted when a deletion instruction arrives from Shopify, which Shopify sends after you uninstall the app (typically about 48 hours later) or when a shopper requests erasure. See the full data retention policy for details.
